When you start to learn arithmetic in the early grades, one of the first things you have to do is memorize the addition, subtraction, and multiplication tables. This is important because being able to remember these tables makes it faster and easier to solve math problems. But the process of memorizing the tables does not help you to understand the real meaning of the arithmetic operation involved. For instance, you learn that 3 times 4 equals 12, but you do not learn why it does not equal 15 or 20. If, as you memorize the table, you are also able to visualize the operation, you will gain a better understanding of what the operation means.
